A major problem in the modern world of healthcare has been long waiting times and influx of patients. The global health system fought against numerous difficulties during the global pandemic of 2020. The waiting times were one of the biggest issues worldwide. According to a survey by the San Sebastián University, 63% of Chileans point out that reducing waiting lists is one of the main actions to improve the health system in Chile. However, new and innovative solutions in the healthcare industry might change this.

Fighting against long waiting times - The main problems caused by waiting lists

There is no doubt that long waiting times, in any industry, but especially in healthcare, present a major problem. Addressing one of the biggest problems is not easy, but, with new technology powered by breakthrough AI, it is becoming a reality. According to the "Chile speaks to us" survey conducted by San Sebastián University, a notable 63% of Chileans identify the reduction of waiting lists as a primary action to enhance the country's health system. The long waiting times are also, of course, a global issue. Some of the main difficulties that healthcare faces due to long waiting times are:

  • Untimely responses from healthcare providers

  • Difficulties scheduling a medical appointment or a follow-up

  • Overall decreased patient satisfaction

  • Ineffective care and medical centers

It is clear that healthcare needs to adapt and implement better solutions or the current problems caused by the long waiting times may only get worse. Luckily, there are a few innovative solutions on the horizon. Let's see how new technology can help combat this issue.

Facing the challenge through innovation

As mentioned above, innovation and new technologies are the best chance the world of healthcare has to combat the problem of long waiting times as well as other issues that have plagued the global health system for some time. AI technology, and natural language processing combined with machine learning in particular have brought in many new improvements.

With natural language processing AI or NLP AI for short, the process of scheduling and rescheduling appointments can be fully automatized. Patients do not have to go through difficult and often complicated call center menus to get the information they need or to schedule an appointment. With NLP AI such as Patricia, patients can receive personalized appointment reminders and follow-up messages from the virtual health assistant. These reminders can be more engaging, and the system can proactively address any concerns a patient might have, at any time of the day. Unlike call centers, AI system such as Patricia functions 24/7 and take on multiple patients at once.

Virtual consultations that come with the use of this kind of AI also help narrow down the number of patients that come in for an in-person appointment. Namely, in certain scenarios where direct and in-person medical appointments are not necessary, patients can use virtual consultation options or telemedicine. This reduces the need for physical visits and, thus helps in managing waiting lists. In addition to this, patient engagement can be increased as they can now be fully informed about their conditions, treatments, and preventive care from the comfort of their own homes.

AI can also run through information faster than humans. Patient records, appointment histories, and resource availability can all be analyzed quickly to find optimal solutions. Furthermore, NLP AI can contribute to predictive analytics models. So, based on previous historical data, AI can help the healthcare system adjust resource allocation accordingly.

Preventing long waiting times - In conclusion

Automatization, efficient and timely communication, 24/7 availability, and predictive analytics are some of the many advantages brought in by natural language processing AI. Proper implementation of such a system with continuous improvements made by a dedicated team of experts can help reduce waiting times, improve patient satisfaction, and enhance the overall efficiency of the healthcare system not only in Chile but on a global level as well. All in all, the future projects and development of such a system present a clear ability to streamline many processes in healthcare and create a more patient-centered and responsive healthcare world.
